Speech-language pathology (SLP) has been called an “applied interdisciplinary behavioral science”, concerned with helping persons with disorders of communication, cognition or swallowing better their lives. At Payne Wellness Center, an SLP practice focuses on the needs of adults with these problems.
Carey Payne is licensed by the state of Illinois as a speech-language pathologist, and certified to practice by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. He is a member of both ASHA and the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association. With over 25 years of experience in the field, Carey may help you meet your goals for communicating, thinking or swallowing better. SLP evaluation and treatment may address your needs at different levels:
- At the level of the basic change, or the impairment of how your brain or your muscles work (such as saying the name of a common object ,after having a stroke or because of stuttering)
- At the level of how the brain or muscle action lets you accomplish an activity (for example, asking your wife to pass the “potatoes” at dinner)
- At the level of performing that activity, to participate in home and community life (such as ordering the whipped potatoes with an entrée at a restaurant)
Carey will work with you in your world, whenever possible. Testing and treatment can and will be done in your home, where you work and where you live your life. A person learning a new skill learns more easily, where they will use it all the time.
